Zakat
Following the Hanafi school, as practised in Bangladesh — with the correct rules for nisab, hawl and debts. Your figures never leave your device.
How Zakat is calculated
Zakat is obligatory on an adult, sane Muslim whose zakatable wealth, after debts due, reaches the nisab: 7.5 bhori (87.48 g) of gold or 52.5 bhori (612.36 g) of silver.
In the Hanafi school, gold, silver, cash and trade goods are added together by value. If you own only gold, the gold nisab applies; if only silver, the silver nisab. Any other combination is measured against the silver nisab, which benefits the poor.
Zakat becomes due when the nisab has been held for one full lunar year. It is 2.5% of all zakatable wealth on that day — not just the amount above the nisab.
Your home, household furniture, clothing, personal vehicle, tools of your trade and business fixed assets. Agricultural produce (ushr) and livestock follow separate rules.
Zakat may only be given to the eight categories named in the Qur’an (At-Tawbah 9:60), such as the poor and the needy. We record Zakat separately and direct it only to eligible recipients.
This calculator follows the Hanafi school. Other schools differ on some points, such as jewellery that is worn. For complex cases — business partnerships, inheritance or agriculture — please consult a qualified Mufti.
